What happens is the ethanol that&#8217;s in today&#8217;s &#8220;high tech&#8221; gasoline turns into a gelatinous mess inside the carburetor&#8217;s float bowl, thus fouling the pilot jet and the other tiny orifices that allow the carb to deliver a perfectly mixed air\/fuel charge to the engine.<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms of a dirty carburetor<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Bike starts on the choke, warms up, idles, but dies as soon as you shut the choke off.<\/li>\n<li>Bike only starts on carburetor cleaner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are other symptoms, but these are the most obvious.<\/p>\n<h2>How to clean a dirty carburetor<\/h2>\n<p>The bike in the pics is a &#8217;78 Yamaha IT250. It has a mechanical round slide Mikuni carb.<\/p>\n<p>Note that your carb may look significantly different.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Set the petcock to &#8220;off.&#8221; Double check that the throttle returns without hanging up<\/h3>\n<h3>2. Chances are your pilot jet, the small one, is clogged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>4. Clean out the jets, paying special attention to the pilot jet<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use carburetor cleaner and a small piece of wire. Work the wire through the jets.<\/li>\n<li>Clean all parts in an ultrasonic cleaner, if available. Note that 90% of the time ultrasonic cleaning is NOT necessary.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/moto2n.com\/braap\/ultrasonic-parts-cleaning-carburetors-etc\/\">Click here to read more about ultrasonic cleaning<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Blow out all holes and orifices using compressed air.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>5. Reassemble the carburetor<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>O-rings and gaskets can be &#8220;brought back&#8221; by massaging them with 2T oil.<\/li>\n<li>Replace all broken or worn o-rings and gaskets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>7. Be gentle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>8.
